This module was all about increasing my awareness on sharing my creations, i used a wide range of websites and techniques to be used for my creations, from documenting my Personal Brand on my WordPress Blog to creating a Stop-Motion Animation with Vine. All of these creations was a challenge as i had never done it before, some were fun to create, others were frustrating to create however in the end i managed to finish them.
For the first task of 161MC i and to identify my own online presence, who was inspiring to me and finally how i would brand myself. On the whole i think no matter what social media I’m on, I still act the same, with my blog I’m not exactly professional all the time after all it is a blog not a report, on Youtube i comment on videos occasionally quoting a famous meme and on Playstation i like to have fun all the time. My media brand would be similar to Seananners, a Youtube partner who i have subscribed to and shares my feeling towards games. All of my media from news to entertainment is online which is very different to older generation. With this fact the uses of the media, the current generation and future generation is opting for a more interactive way to get their news and entertainment. Barrett stated that: “In the place of the old models therefore, there are a number of new ones rising up.” (Barrett,2010,p1) . Before many people found their news and entertainment on Newspapers or TV, now it is online, people have made a living by uploading entertainment and/or news online. For example the most popular Youtube channel ‘PewDiePie’ used to sell hotdogs, seeing a gap in the market he made his Youtube career and now many more people are trying to make their name on Youtube like many people tried to make their name to Newspapers and TV.
The Big Pitch was my second task for 161MC, i had to create an idea for an independent film, how it would be invested and how it would be released. I went for a story that could honestly be close to a true story, Bradley Manning was arrested for leaking compromising footage to the internet, my idea is based around this however added more action and drama to the story, along with setting it in the UK. I wanted to make an original story as much as possible to make more unique compared to my fellow classmates, also Kroll as stated that: “This may sound basic, but we’ve all fallen into the trap of falling in love with an idea that isn’t marketable and realizing only when it’s too late that we should have tested it or refined it at a much earlier stage. So nip any story issues in the bud, and make sure you have an amazing, original idea and a tightly constructed log line to go along with it.” (Kroll,2014,p1). This gave me more emphasise to create my own and original idea, after researching on possible films that might be the same to mine i did find one that was similar to the idea of video leaks ‘The Fifth Estate’.
For the Remix task i decided to blend many Sci-fi films together: Fifth Element, Dredd and Star Trek. I decided to uses these films as Star Trek was very popular and even if people never watched it they would of heard about it, Dredd wasn’t unpopular but still many people didn’t know about it, Fifth Element however was very unpopular in my generation. I chose to do Sci-fi as their is no limit with this genre. I used this research into making the Fifth Element the dominate film out of the rest with Dredd being secondary and Star Trek tertiary, i did this to make Fifth Element more popular as it is a very good film and i wanted others to enjoy it as much as i did. My video is liable to copyright, the idea of copyright has been debated for a long time now. Aaron Swartz was a victim of copyright. In the film ‘The Internet’s Own Boy: The story of Aaron Swartz’ (2014). He states that “Media should be free to use and not hidden behind a wall of money.” I can relate to this as the media is already controlled, we trust companies with our contact details even though they are strangers to us but we want the media behind the payment.
The Stop-Motion task was interesting and frustrating at the same time as we had to upload them on Vine which i was new to, so i struggled with its interface for some time. I chose to do record a video game character, in this case i chose Kirby as this would be very unique and also if the viewer didn’t recognise him, they would still relate to him cause of his looks. Warhol states that “In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes.” (Warhol 1968). I agree with this fact, since using Vine a lot of people have made short videos and getting a large audience, in this case a Vine user ‘Colby’ uploads his videos on Vine and gets more that 100,000 views for every video.
For Web 2.0 i had to recreate a story using online tools, i decided to do something very personal to me while at the same being very unique i chose to retell a episode of Tom and Jerry using Amazon, Facebook, Youtube and Twitch. To make the websites fit the story i used Google Chrome and used the ‘inspect element’ tool to alter the websites making it fit the story more. During this task i learnt more technical skills as i didn’t want to make new accounts for each of my characters and manually learnt inspect element.
For the final task i had to remix a documentary using Popcorn Maker, i definitely increased my technical skills using a new system however i found this system very frustrating to use. I remixed RT News’s North Korea Documentry with ‘Club&Seal’s video on North Korea .Galloway said that: “Recently, a new breed of ‘dramatic’ documentary that uses coercion; persuasion, and emotional manipulation has emerged to critical and commercial success.” (Galloway 2007). Mine definitely manipulates emotions showing the realism of North Korea while making their important figures look silly.

So now i had to twist a story using the internet, i used Quicktime Player to record my actions on the screen and i used Google Chrome’s ‘inspect element’ tool to change a website to fit my story. For example i changed my Facebook page to look like one of my characters Facebook page without having to make an entire new Facebook account. The story i wanted to do had to be important in my childhood. Which was a big list. I decided to do cartoons because, i LOVE cartoons (unfortunately kids TV is being replaced with live action junk…) and i already used video games in my work (See popcorn maker for more details) and a film would of been too long so i wanted to do a short based on a old cartoon. Even then the list was still pretty big, you have Transformers, Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, The Simpsons…. (I could go on but i won’t). I finally decided to go with Tom and Jerry because it is very unique compared to my classmates work and it was important in my childhood for making laugh so damn much.
I have already had some experience with Stop-Motion with my spooky Rubik’s Cube however the twist was that i to upload my Stop-Motion with Vine, yaaaaaaaaaaaay (read that as sarcastically as you can please). At first as you would guess i was annoyed that i had to make a account on this platform but then i simply accepted it and i may consider using it again in the future thus adding to my media platforms. My Stop-Motion uses two of my brothers plushy collection Kirby and Meta-Knight, it shows Kirby floating using his iconic power of sucking things and absorbing there powers however when he ttys to absorb Meta-Knight’s power, he is quickly turned into full serious and dark mode like Meta-Knight (until he gets bored). Unfortunately Vine decided that the video would be best sideways… though it does add to my idea that Kirby is floating. He basically does it all the time anyway. I decided to make Meta Knight Japanese to show Kirby’s origins and makes him sound more serious. I went with this idea using the piece of paper writing down Meta Knights name in Japanese and used sounds from Super Smash Bro’s with the Japanese language on.
Not going to lie. At first i thought we were going to make popcorn. Turns out that it was instead a website where you could remix any footage you found online. This was annoyingly became aware to me after i had finished my remix, but i was still satisfied with the result. Popcorn Maker is free but can be frustrating to use, however i am told that it is in beta, so hopefully if i feel like using it in the future the system will have improved. The first thing i created was a top 5 list. I decided to do a top 5 video games. BEFORE YOU WATCH this list is just my opinion, this isn’t from a chart or anything, just a fan expressing his opinion.
For my remix documentry I used RT’s documentry on North Korea along with ‘Club&Seal’ video on North Korea as well. The timings of the video are out of place, and it is difficult to have them adjusted correctly since each of the videos bars are curved, sometimes the curves are touching but theres still a gap or if their too close it will replace the other video. Beside from that however i am happy with the result (Though i won’t be happy with the video if North Korea finds it…)
Now this was a fun one…. my task was to create a trailer using footage only from the internet. So i felt a Sci-fi genre trailer would be my best bet since they could all easily blend together (Someone should try blending Star Wars and Star Trek DVDs as see what happens. Will it blend?) since a Sci-fi as no limits expect the limits of our imagination. However it did still feel challenging as finding the footage was difficult. I mainly used footage from the film ‘The Fifth Element’ (Recommend you watch this film pronto) i then also combined Dredd, Star Trek: Wrath of Khan and Star Trek: Into Darkness (See what i did there?). Overall it worked well but i did have a alternate ending to the video. The song i used was ‘The Chain Gang Sleepwalking’ so i thought of using the scene with the fire skull and the man waking up (0:52) at the end with the music immediately stopping including all the action to give a sense of a dream feeling. However in the end i decided not to as i couldn’t find anymore footage to make that ending more conclusive and the way i would of wanted it to be.
The Big Pitch
My story was called ‘Truth’ it is set in 2006, London a Irish journalist called Thomas Moore, he works for the Guardian, whilst trying to find a new story he accidentally discovers a video leak showing British Soldiers shooting unarmed people thinking they are terrorists. Thomas quickly tries to make a story out of this. However his publisher refuses to give him permission to continue on this story. This causes Thomas to decided whether to hide this or let the truth be known. He deicides to publish his story on WikiLeaks. After that he is on the run from the British Government whilst at the same time he tries to figure out a way to escape his pursuers.
I would of chose the British Film Institute to help me fund my project and i would then also choose the British Film Festival to release and show my film. I chose these two options because i wanted to keep this British to make more people aware that Independent British films can be really good.
The name Thomas Moore was inspired by someone called ‘Thomas More’ this Thomas was also a writer, however this writer was executed before he could publish one of his books showing that he was in danger but he still tried to make a book. This can link to Thomas Moore on how he put himself in danger because of his work.
I’m not very active with social media to tell you the truth, I mainly uses 3 social platforms:
When it comes to Youtube i am mostly the audience, i watch videos and i comment on them, however i have had those brief moments of ‘I really want to make something on Youtube’. Since gaming is a big part of my life i recorded games that i played. I also upload my work from College or University.
When i stopped uploading videos somehow inspired my father to make videos on his games…. and he is really into it and has now re-inspired me to make videos again. Sounds confusing i know.
When it comes to Facebook… i was forced to make a account. My friends and family kept nagging me to make an account and even when i did i didn’t use very much until i was 15 when i wanted to meet up with friends. Then i used it a whole lot more to organise with my group when and where we would be filming. I also use Facebook to upload my work creations. (Im too embarrassed to show my family me playing games).
Finally Playstation. I am really unsure if this even counts but, even then I’m using and making a name for myself in the Playstation’s media world (Though its incredibly small at the moment). However i use the platform to increase my power on other platforms like Youtube. Even though i don’t get much views it turns out if i put my video on Reddit it gets a massive increase in views, (I don’t use Reddit at the moment, thats right up my brothers alley however, but i am starting to use it more and more often, but for now i don’t consider it being on my top uses of social platforms).
I was inspired to create by Stan Lee. Before you laugh or say ‘this guy is insane’ HERE ME OUT.
For those who don’t really know Stan Lee, he basically created Marvel. He was the one who came up with Captain America, Iron Man, Spider Man and the X-Men. Of course i read a lot of Marvel comics when i was young. I read them so much i basically refused to read anything without visuals (sounds like i read like a baby). I even started making comics when i was 11 not for profit but for the fun of it. I made a lot of comics, i have a massive folder full of it. I may consider making a category full of pictures of them. I loved visuals so much that i then watched films and played computer games. A lot of games and a lot more films…….
Stan Lee’s persona on the internet is basically a good and funny guy. This is supported by the fact that he always accepts to make a very very small cameo in nearly every Marvel film. He was in ‘The Amazing Spider Man’ with the fight in the school, it shows him being funny by not being able to detect the fact theres a fight happening right behind him that’s destroying the library that he’s tidying up. In ‘The Avengers Assemble’ film he says to the news “Superheroes in New York? give me a break”. Thus showing his character in the film that he doesn’t believe in heroes and/or he doesn’t like them at all, when in real life he obviously loves them. Irony beyond bounds.
He’s never over-the-top when it comes to his clothes, he wears casual clothes showing that he’s basically a normal guy and showing that anyone can be as good as him. His posture and poses show that he is a funny and easy-going person, showing that his internet persona is similar to his celebrity persona.
I would brand myself like Seananners. Seananners is a Youtube partner who records himself with a webcam of him playing video games and sometimes making vlogs. I would brand like him because he persona on the internet is likeable, funny and can be extremely cunning (When i say cunning i mean the whole meme about him, ‘Never Trust Nanners’ NTN). However i don’t think cats would be my main icon, i would most likely use one of my earlier comic characters. A very cartoon looking knight. He was the first ever character i created when it came to my comic hobby (I’m not going to say career because i didn’t earn a single penny).
